This elegant route with a logical layout goes up a large inclined limestone blade to finish at the top of superb needles that were hitherto inaccessible and little-known. It is probably by similarity with the slender shapes of the coiffed young ladies present in many valleys of the Alps that the name “young ladies” was attributed to these particular geological formations.
The word “Castagnet” designates the name of the district, itself coming from the forest of centuries-old chestnut trees located on a sandstone slope where the return path winds.
In the clearing at the end of the via, just behind the summit of the needles, we will discover the remains of an old farm flanked by a very beautiful water tank which recalls the agricultural use of these spaces before the reforestation carried out at the beginning of the last century.
The “demoiselles du Castagnet” via ferrata was inaugurated by Patrick Berhault, an illustrious mountaineer and climber from Nice who died in 2004.
